My laptop gave up somewhere around the third week of a trip. Not dramatically. A small notice slid in from the corner of the screen saying the startup disk was almost full, and every attempt to import a card after that ended with the same message. I had roughly 240 gigabytes of raw files and short clips sitting on memory cards with nowhere to put them, and a machine that would not even open the photo library anymore.
The obvious answer people give is a NAS. I looked at one for about two evenings. The enclosures are not expensive on their own, but by the time you add two drives, decide where the thing is going to live, and accept that you now own a small computer that needs firmware updates and a network configuration, the whole idea started to feel heavier than the problem it was meant to solve. I move apartments often. A device bolted to a router in one room does not travel with me.
So I went the boring route, and it has held up for three years. Two external SSDs, identical models, bought at the same time. Everything imports to the first one. Once a month I plug in the second, mirror the first onto it with a plain sync, then unplug it and leave it in a drawer in a different room. That is the entire system. No RAID, no shares, no app running in the background.
Choosing the drives took longer than building the routine
Picking the actual hardware was the part I underestimated. The read speed printed on the box tells you almost nothing about how a drive behaves when you dump 60 gigabytes of video onto it in one pass, which is exactly when weaker controllers heat up and slow to a crawl. Sustained write performance and thermal behavior are what matter for archive work, and those figures rarely appear on the packaging.
That search kept pulling me toward Korean review sites. The portable SSD market there is unusually crowded, since domestic manufacturers sit on the shelf right next to the global brands, so the coverage tends to go further: sustained transfer graphs, enclosure temperatures after long writes, teardown photos of the controller inside. The current crop of models is reviewed here in detail on one of those sites, with write speeds measured across a full transfer rather than a short burst. Those graphs settled which of my two finalists I bought.
Three years in, the drawer drive has never actually been needed, which is the point. The working drive took one bad fall onto tile and survived. Total cost came in under two years of a large cloud plan, and nothing I own now depends on a subscription staying active or a company quietly reshuffling its storage tiers.
